recent work by Cathy McIntire

Cathy McIntire's painting technique is influenced by her years working with watermedia. In order to efficiently transfer these to canvas and panel supports, she uses alkyd paints, known for their similarity to oil but with a shorter drying time. The alkyds allow her to apply the paint in transparent layers or as a heavy impasto using a palette knife.

In recent years she has added the use of panels prepared with gesso to her "canvas" toolbox. The panel is a rigid support for her paintings, allowing her to use any medium or technique she wishes, without any danger of cracking or other surface damage to the painting. Most importantly, panels allow her the choice of using epoxy resin as a final varnish. Epoxy resin is the equivalent of 50 coats of traditional varnish. The result is a glass-like finish that is very clear and shows every brushstroke, enhances the color, and makes the painting look like it was just painted.
