Simply stated, contemporary art

I came of age in the 70's and still hold dear my you-do-your-thing-and-I'll-do-mine attitude.
Art has always been an important part of who I am. As a kid I drew horses instead of practicing the piano. My mom framed my first etching, created while I was in high school. I graduated from college with a BFA and have always worked in the Arts, whether in commercial or fine art. These days I paint in my studio at home, living a quiet life with husband Mac, in the countryside outside of Atlanta.

When I was an art student I would imagine myself painting with wild abandon – slinging paint onto the canvas, splatters going everywhere; in short, being totally in the moment, transfixed by the process of creating art. What I didn’t understand at the time was how much I was going to have to learn about the process of painting before I could start slinging that paint in a meaningful way.
My painting style has evolved over time from traditional to contemporary. The traditional work was all about following the rules of painting and getting the technical aspects right. There came a point when I no longer felt challenged. I was at a point where the “rules” of painting were second nature, so I decided to just relax and enjoy the act of painting.
The process is the exciting part. I have no detailed plan because the challenge is making decisions in the moment. Each painting is a statement of my response to that process, during the moment of creation. Some of my paintings have a calm, traditional look while others are more energetic, with drips and layers peeking through. Painting isn't always orderly and there is a constant pull between what I've already done and what I'll be doing tomorrow. My paintings are original and individual, a commentary on the struggle to express what I am feeling at the time I create them.
The meaning of my art lies in the process of creation and how that process influences the end result. Rather than a vehicle meant to express an idea or philosophy, I think of my art as a metaphor for life’s journey, in the sense that our lives are created through our experiences along the way; we are all original and individual.
